Description
I (BROWN) PARTICIPATED IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR A LIBRARY SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGY ACT GRANT (SEE www.IMLS.GOV) WITH MY UNIVERSITY CAMPUS LIBRARY TO RESEARCH THE POTENTIAL FOR USING DIGITAL PRIMARY SOURCES FOR TEACHING INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS I BECAME INTERESTED IN COLLABORATING WITH SCHOOL LIBRARIANS AND CLASSROOM TEACHERS ON THE DISCOVERY OF THE BENEFITS OF USING THESE DIGITAL SOURCES WITH STUDENTS. Students are fascinated with old documents, such as diaries, letters, and journals, which give firsthand accounts of life in a particular period (Veccia, 2004), and my first opportunity to work with them came with an informal meeting between the librarian and the English teacher at a nearby rural high school. As a result of our initial conversations, we decided on three goals for the collaborative project between the high school and the university. Although we all had our own particular expectations from the collaboration, the students received the greatest benefits, and 1 discovered that, indeed, students are motivated to use online resources such as the American Memory Project and Documenting the American South in their research processes.
